Restaurant Review:

Maui Brewing Company

Maui Brewing Company Review – Did you know that Maui Brewing Company is Hawaii’s largest craft brewery? Yup, it’s even bigger than the Big Island’s well-known Kona Brewing.

But that’s not the brewery’s only triumph. In 2019, Maui Brewing Company became the United States’ first grid-independent brewery, relying entirely on solar power and biodiesel to fuel their operation.

On top of that, their Kihei brewery and restaurant boast excellent views, a superb happy hour, and a variety of crisp, freshly brewed beers.

Considering paying the brewery a visit on your next trip to Maui? Here is our complete review – with everything you need to know about Maui Brewing Company.

The Beers

Maui Brewing Company’s beers are, in a word, excellent. And that’s not just one writer’s opinion – it’s fact.

MBC has won numerous gold medals at beer competitions like the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. Winning brews include Maui Brewing’s Coconut Porter and Valley Isle ESB (extra special bitter). The ESB isn’t brewed regularly anymore, but Coconut Porter flows from the taps year-round, so be sure to give it a try.

Maui Brewing Company has eight year-round releases plus a variety of rotating limited releases. Year-round beers are on tap 24/7/365 at MBC’s Kihei brewery and include favorites like Big Swell IPA, Bikini Blonde, and Pau Hana Pilsner.

Meanwhile, the limited-release beers are as creative as they come, ranging from fruity sours and Japanese-style rice lagers to mango sticky-rice flavored IPAs.

The Space

Maui Brewing Company has tap houses across the state, but their Kihei brewery is the heart of the operation. This is where all Maui Brewing Company beers, seltzers, and spirits are made and canned. It’s a must-visit for any beer lover on Maui.

Set on a hilltop on Lipoa Parkway, you’ll find Maui Brewing Company’s 85,000-square-foot space – home to a brewery, tasting room, and restaurant. When you drive up, you’ll see the full scope of MBC’s massive space.

You’ll be greeted by the hosts when you enter the brewery. If you’re over 21 and plan on drinking, they’ll give you a wristband.

You’ll find the tasting room to the right of the host stand. This intimate indoor-outdoor space is a great place to kick back and sample some of Maui Brewing’s best beers. There is also a limited food menu available. The tasting room is only open to those over 21.

The Tour

On weekends, Maui Brewing Company offers VIP production tours for just $20 per person.

Maui Brewing Company Tour

You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how Maui Brewing Company brews a whopping 65,000 barrels of beer a year and learn about the brewery’s sustainability efforts – arguably the most impressive part of the tour. (Fun fact: Maui Brewing Company captures the CO2 released during brewing to carbonate its soda lines. Genius!)

Tours also include a tasting of MBC’s year-round releases.

The Restaurant

If you’re feeling peckish, have the family in tow, or prefer a craft cocktail over a beer, head to the restaurant side of Maui Brewing Company. This expansive space features a beer garden, indoor and outdoor seating, and a bar top that stretches the length of the restaurant.

Grab a seat at the bar and sample one of the 36 beers on tap, or go for a hard seltzer or craft cocktails. From here, you can also catch whatever game is on TV and sneak glimpses of the brewing facilities just behind the bar.

Or, snag a table and chow down on MBC’s elevated pub food. The menu features bar bites like BBQ pork sliders, boneless wings, burgers, and pizzas.

The restaurant also features a beer garden, games like oversized Jenga and Connect4, and nightly live music from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Plus, the outdoor portion of the restaurant faces west, so some nights, you’re treated to excellent sunset views.

Some things to note…

  • Maui Brewing Company currently does not accept reservations. There is usually no wait during midday visits, but the restaurant can fill up come dinner and happy hour.
  • Maui Brewing Company also has a paperless menu. (They’re all about sustainability, remember?!) You must scan a QR code to see what’s available.
  • There is a five-drink maximum for all parties. Please drink responsibly!

The Food

As we mentioned above, Maui Brewing Company has a selection of Maui-style pub food.

The menu is the same for both lunch and dinner, featuring classics like beer-battered fish and chips, salads, burgers, and small bites. It’s a brewery, so don’t expect a five-star meal. But everything is definitely tasty!

Out of everything on the menu, the pizzas are the best thing to come out of the MBC kitchen. There are a handful of creative options, like the Harvester, with local kale, caramelized onion, roasted garlic, mozzarella, and white sauce.

For dessert, try the adult float with Imperial Coconut Porter. Just make sure you have a designated driver – the Imperial Coconut Porter is 9.4% ABV!

Some things to note…

  • There are very few options for vegan and gluten-free eaters, so keep that in mind if you have dietary restrictions.
  • There is also a kid’s menu with options that will keep even the pickiest keiki happy. Think buttered noodles and grilled cheese.

The Happy Hour

Maui Brewing Company boasts a killer happy hour. From 3:30 to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, you can score a dollar off house drafts, three dollars off craft cocktails, half off select apps, and $12 pizzas. The cheapest craft pizza is $19, so this is well and truly a good deal.

Good for Kids?

It may be a brewery… but yes, Maui Brewing Company is an excellent place to bring the kids.

The restaurant portion of the brewery is very family-friendly. The kids can play fun lawn games and dance to the live music while you sit back and sip your crisp MBC beer.
