Luau Review: Ritz Luau
Tales of Kapa Moe Luau
If you’re planning a trip to West Maui and looking for a luau experience, the Ritz Carlton Luau, also known as Kapa Moe Luau, is one worth attending. Here, we’ll breakdown what you can expect, helpful tips from a local, and the essential details you need to make the most of your Kapalua luau.
Location & Atmosphere
The Kapa Moe Luau takes place at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua—a scenic venue situated on Maui’s northwest coastline. At first, we were a little disappointed that it was indoors, but in Kapalua, it’s best to be indoors due to rain. It ended up being perfect. It was a little windy, and even though it’s open-air, it was blocked enough to be comfortable. Photos opps and crafts are done outside under these beautiful trees.
We’ve been to a few luaus where it rained, and there’s nothing great about it. They may give you plastic-bag parkas, but you’re still cold and wet.
Schedule and Show Overview
The Ritz Carlton Luau runs on select evenings, so it’s important to check their schedule in advance. Gates generally open at 5:30 p.m., giving you time to settle in before the entertainment starts at 6:00 p.m. The show features Hawaiian music, hula dancing, and storytelling that brings to life the history and legends of Maui and Polynesia.
The performances are well-executed, and the narration throughout helps guests understand the significance behind each dance or tradition.
The Menu
The food is served buffet-style and features both traditional Hawaiian dishes and local favorites. A few menu highlights include:
- Kalua Pork – Slow-roasted and tender, this dish is cooked in an imu (underground oven), a traditional Hawaiian method. You get to see the pig!
- Ahi Poke Bar – Fresh, raw ahi tuna, seasoned in a classic Hawaiian style.
- Poi – A staple in Hawaiian cuisine, this dish is made from taro root and is mildly sweet and earthy.
- Short Ribs – Asian braised and so tasty!
- Garlic Shrimp – with Lemon Butter and from Oahu.
- Desserts – A selection of tropical desserts, including haupia (coconut pudding) and fresh pineapple.
Vegetarian options are available, but it’s worth noting that the selection is somewhat limited. If you’re vegan or have specific dietary restrictions, calling ahead can help you make sure there’ll be enough options.
Drinks
The ticket price covers a selection of alcoholic beverages such as mai tais, as well as non-alcoholic options like fresh juices and soft drinks. The cocktails here are well-made, and you’ll likely find the bartenders knowledgeable about the local flavors that make up the perfect island drink. The drink menu isn’t overly extensive, but it’s enough to suit most preferences.
What Sets It Apart
The fireknife dancer was spectacular, but we really enjoyed the aerial silks performance. I think Wailea Marriott Luau is the only other one to do that.
Tips for Attending
- Consider the Ali’i Tickets: These premium tickets allow you to arrive early, get a lei, and gives you a table right upfront. Worth the extra money.
- Bring a Light Jacket: Kapalua can get cooler in the evening, especially in winter months. Having a light jacket will keep you comfortable throughout the event.
Final Thoughts
The Ritz Kapalua Luau is an excellent choice if you’re looking to learn more about Hawaiian culture in an upscale setting—just know that the experience here is a bit more upscale than the Royal Lahaina Luau (and the price reflects that.)
If you’re staying in West Maui and want an elegant evening that offers insights into the rich traditions of the islands, this luau could be the right fit.
