Eating healthy organic food is important to many Hawaii residents, and fortunately, the islands are home to countless organic farms and markets. If you want to keep up with your organic diet while visiting the islands, watch for these top Hawaii organic food sources.
Ono Organics
Maui
Ono Organics is a family-owned farm located in Kipahulu in East Maui, about 10 miles past Hana. Established over 40 years ago, this 50-acre farm is one of Maui’s largest and oldest organic farms. The farm cultivates a wide variety of tropical fruit – like bananas, jackfruit, citrus, guava, papayas, and much much more – as well as more exotic fruits like sapote, durian, eggfruit, and star apple. Ono Organics also produces cacao, which is turned into delicious Hana Gold chocolate bars.
Want to see this Hawaii organic wonderland for yourself? Ono Organics offers private fruit sampling tours. You’ll tour the expansive property in a 4×4 mule and take home a box brimming with exotic organic fruit.
Down to Earth
Maui, Oahu
Down to Earth has been Hawaii’s go-to stop for organic and natural food for over forty years. This vegetarian health food shop first opened in a small shack in Wailuku, Maui, in 1977. DTE has since become a flourishing organic grocery chain with six locations across Hawaii. It has also won Star-Advertiser’s People’s Choice Award for Best Health Food Store 16 years in a row! The shop features a variety of organic produce, vitamins, and grocery essentials, as well as a hot bar and deli with smoothies, juices, and grab-and-go options.
Oʻo Farm
Maui
If you’ve ever eaten at Pacific’o, the Feast at Lele, or Aina Gourmet Market, you’ve likely already had a taste of O’o Farm’s ultra-fresh organic produce – as the farm supplies the Lahaina eateries with a plethora of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Nestled high on the misty slopes of Haleakala, this eight-acre farm is dedicated to no-till practices and organic farming and hopes to share the benefits of organic produce with visitors. O’o Farm helps spread the organic gospel through its immersive farm tours, where guests tour the property, collect produce, then sit down to a freshly prepared lunch (or brunch) with ingredients collected on the tour.
Moloa’a Organica’a
Kauaʻi
Moloa’a Organica’a has several superlative titles. Not only is Moloa’a the largest organic farm on Kauai, but it is also the most diverse, cultivating a bounty of vegetables, herbs, and fruits. This family-owned farm is in partnership with over a dozen cafes and markets around Kauai – such as Harvest Market, Princeville Foodland, Kauai Juice Co., and more. You can even find their produce on shelves at Whole Foods on Oahu.
Kokua Market Natural Foods
Oahu
Kokua Market in Honolulu is Hawaii’s first natural food co-op, established in 1971. Today, it has 4,000-plus owners that are passionate about healthy, sustainable living in Hawaii. Kokua Market only carries organic produce – 65 percent of which is sourced from local farmers. You can also find a selection of bulk items, vitamins, and healthy groceries.
Kahumana Organic Farm
Oahu
Kahumana Organic Farm is more than a farm – it’s a community. But we’ll get to that. First and foremost, Kahumanu produces 100,000 pounds of produce each year strictly using organic and regenerative practices. You can sample Kahumana’s produce at the Farm To Table Cafe, which serves various dishes made with produce grown on the farm and meats and fish sourced by local suppliers. Meal proceeds support Kahumana’s non-profit mission, which aims to provide services to children, people without housing, and people with developmental disabilities. In addition to the farm, Kahuaman’s 50-acre property features a yoga studio, a day program for adults with disabilities, and housing and services for homeless families.
Kumu Farms
Maui
Kumu Farms was born on the island of Molokai in 1981, originally cultivating specialty produce like culinary herbs and peppers. Eventually, Kumu Farms expanded to Maui and now grows a medley of certified organic and conventional produce – including their oh-so-ono sunrise papayas, as well as eggplants, bananas, carrots, fennel, and more. Kumu Farms has operations on both Maui and Molokai. On Maui, you can shop Kumu Farms’ produce at the Country Market in Waikapu at the Maui Tropical Plantation.
Hoku Foods
Kauaʻi
With two locations in Kapaa and Koloa, Hoku Foods is the one-stop shop for all things organic on Kauai. What started as a natural foods bulk buying service grew into one of Kauai’s most beloved organic markets. Hoku Foods boasts a vast selection of local organic produce and organic groceries at a low price point. What’s more, Hoku Foods is committed to sustainability and only uses biodegradable and recyclable packaging.
Hawaiian Cloud Forest Coffee
Big Island
There are hundreds of coffee farms on the Big Island, but only a handful are organic – let alone certified organic. But Hawaiian Cloud Forest Coffee is the exception. Located on the slopes of Mauna Kea in the Hamakua region, Hawaiian Cloud Forest Coffee is one of the largest certified organic coffee farms in the state. The property even has its own certified organic coffee mill on-site. You can find Hawaiian Cloud Forest Coffee at natural markets around the Big Island, Whole Foods on Oahu and Kauai, or you can order a piping hot cup at Merriman’s in Waimea and Cafe Pesto in Hilo.
Mana Foods
Maui
Mana Foods is one of Maui’s most iconic natural markets. Located in the hippie town of Paia, Mana Foods has been offering the Maui community fresh, local, organic produce since 1983. About 90 percent of Mana’s produce section is certified organic, and the rest of the store is stocked with heaps of other healthy organic groceries. Mana Foods also has a smoothie bar, a hot food bar, a bakery, a vitamin room, a bulk section, and a salad bar. Is it any wonder Mana is a hotspot for Maui health nuts?
