An Honest Mama’s Fish House Review
Planning a trip to Maui? You’re probably trying to decide if it’s worth making a reservation at Mama’s Fish House – if you can even get a reservation, that is.
Mama’s Fish House is one of the most famous restaurants on Maui, known for its beautiful north shore views, delectable seafood, and five-star service. It’s usually booked at least six months out. Some people secure their Mama’s reservation before they even book their flights!
Dining at Mama’s isn’t cheap, either. Entrees average about $70. Appetizers go for at least $25. Drinks are between $18 and $25. If you get apps, drinks, and dessert, a bill for two people could easily be over $250.
So, that begs the question – Is Mama’s worth it?
Some vehemently swear that no trip to Maui is complete without dining at Mama’s. Others feel the famous restaurant is meh.
Let’s dive in. Here is our honest Mama’s Fish House review.
The Location
Mama’s has an unparalleled location. The restaurant is tucked in a palm tree grove overlooking a sandy cove on Maui’s north shore, just a few miles east of Paia. It’s picturesque and secluded, and there is nowhere else on Maui like it. Plus, you can almost always see green sea turtles basking in the sand.
The restaurant is set a hundred or so feet back from the beach. You’ll follow a short paved path to the host stand, which takes you through a garden-like setting with a small tree tunnel, flickering torches, and flourishing tropical foliage. It’s like entering a Polynesian wonderland, offering a taste of the magic to come.
The Atmosphere
The vibe at Mama’s is totally unique. The staff is all dressed in vintage aloha clothing, and bright, intricate bouquets of flowers seem to be at every turn.
Parts of the restaurant are open-air and look out towards the ocean. The interior is a riot of rattan, bamboo, lauhala, and dark wood – and the more you look around, the more you notice. The restaurant’s design is so detailed it’s like a museum.
For those who don’t know the story of Mama’s Fish House, the restaurant was founded in 1973 by Floyd and Doris (Mama) Christenson after spending several years sailing around the Pacific. The restaurant houses a collection of art and mementos from their travels around Oceania – and even some tangible pieces of Maui history. Equipment from the long-defunct Paia Sugar Mill is now part of the restaurant’s foundation, and if you look closely, you can see the large, spiralized piece of equipment connecting the floor to the ceiling at the eastern end of the restaurant near the restrooms.
It’s truly a beautiful restaurant with an upscale Polynesian feel. As we said earlier, there is no place on Maui quite like it.
The Service
Mama’s is known to have some of the best service on the island. Even if you don’t have a reservation, the hosts will try to accommodate you (but sometimes it’s just not possible – they’re simply booked solid).
Within a few minutes of being seated, you’ll be served a complimentary amuse-bouche: a cup of bisque and a small loaf of honey poppyseed bread, baked fresh each morning. The amuse-bouche is a nice touch that you don’t often see at restaurants on Maui.
Typically, the service at Mama’s is prompt, helpful, and personable. The servers don’t have too many tables to care for, so they can take their time with each table to answer questions, offer suggestions, and provide the best possible service. Some servers have been at Mama’s for close to 30 years, so they know the restaurant like the back of their hand. That being said, everyone is human, and sometimes people have off days – but generally, service is on point at Mama’s.
The restaurant is also very accommodating of food allergies or dietary restrictions. If you make a note of your allergy on your reservation, your server is usually already aware of the allergy before they get to your table. Mama’s operates like a well-oiled machine, and it shows.
The Food
The food at Mama’s is as good as people say it is.
The dishes are expertly prepared and cooked to perfection, and almost everything on your plate is local and/or fresh.
Mama’s relies on local fishermen for most of their supply – which often includes mahi mahi, ono, ahi, and other local fish like opah, kanpachi, monchong, and opakapaka. The menu changes daily depending on what the fishermen bring in, and the menu will usually also show where the fish was caught and who caught it. Any local fish on the menu was likely still swimming in the ocean no more than a day or two before it ended up on your plate.
People don’t realize how rare it is to be served fresh, local fish on Maui. A surprising amount of Maui restaurants import frozen fish from elsewhere – but not Mama’s.
Mama’s also utilizes local vegetables, fruit, and beef – yes, Mama’s serves beef too! In fact, the short rib is – in my humble opinion – one of the most delectable things on the menu.
Some of our other favorite menu items include the crab cakes, the kanpachi collar, the lobster and crab stuffed fish, and the steamed fish with ginger.
My only critique: not every dish at Mama’s has a mind-blowing presentation. It’s certainly all very pretty. But don’t expect every entree to have an over-the-top plating with more dots and smears than an abstract expressionist painting. (Unless you order Mama’s signature dessert – the Black Pearl.)
Our Verdict:
100% worth going to at least once or on special occasions.
Mama’s is a splurge meal. It’s not the type of place most people can afford to eat at every night. But the restaurant lives up to its reputation as the best restaurant on Maui. After all, you don’t become a James Beard Award semifinalist for no reason.
Between the food, the service, and the stunning location and interior, Mama’s is a meal you won’t soon forget.

We love love Mama’s. I make our reservations at least 6 months before to make sure we get to have a wonderful family dinner. The food and drinks, the service, and the ambiance are all superb! We always make Mama’s our special treat each time we visit Maui.
This place is FANTASTIC…if you go to Maui….ya gotta try this place out….but make your reservations way in advance…very popular place
The “ONLY” negative is getting reservations, we come to Maui annually and request reservations AS soon as available, but we seem to be a bit late no matter what which leaves us on the standby listing but to date that hasn’t happened, we have been able to get in a couple times and without question we recommend it.
You can always sit at the bar and wait for an opening. Or just enjoy the bar for food and drink (get there early.)
